Our approach to diagnostics: why we spend time finding the root cause

At Lakefront Appliance Works, we spend more time on diagnosis than most repair services. This is not inefficiency -- it is strategy. Here is why our diagnostic approach matters and how it works.

The most expensive repair is the wrong repair. When a technician replaces a part based on a guess rather than a diagnosis, there is a significant chance the original problem persists. The customer pays for a part and labor that did not solve anything, and then pays again for the correct repair. We avoid this by investing time upfront.

Our diagnostic process starts before the toolbox opens. We ask the homeowner to describe the problem in detail: when it started, whether it is constant or intermittent, any changes in behavior over time, and any recent events (power outages, water supply changes, etc.) that might be related. This conversation often narrows the possibilities significantly.

Next comes systematic testing. For an oven temperature problem, for example, we do not just measure the temperature. We check the sensor resistance, test the control board outputs, verify the heating element amperage, check the door seal, and test the convection motor. Each test either confirms or eliminates a possible cause.

We document what we find and explain it in plain language. No technical jargon, no vague descriptions. We tell you exactly what is wrong, why it happened, what it takes to fix it, and what it will cost. If there are multiple options, we explain the trade-offs.

This approach takes 15-30 minutes longer than a quick visual inspection and part swap. But it means our first-visit repair success rate is exceptionally high, and our customers rarely see repeat failures. That is the value of thorough diagnostics.
