Why repair beats replacement: the Lakefront Appliance Works philosophy
In a throwaway culture, we believe in fixing what is worth fixing. Here is why thoughtful repair is better for your kitchen and your wallet.
In a culture that often defaults to replacing broken things, we take a different stance. At Lakefront Appliance Works, we believe that a well-made appliance deserves the opportunity to be repaired before it is discarded.
Viking appliances are built with longevity in mind. The materials, construction methods, and engineering behind a Viking Professional range, for example, are designed for decades of use. When a component fails, it does not mean the entire appliance has reached the end of its life. It means one part needs attention.
Consider the economics: a Viking Professional range costs between $5,000 and $15,000 depending on the model and configuration. A typical repair costs between $200 and $800. Even a major repair rarely exceeds $1,500. The math clearly favors repair in most situations.
There is also an environmental argument. Manufacturing a new appliance requires raw materials, energy, transportation, and generates waste. Repairing an existing appliance extends its useful life and keeps functioning equipment out of landfills. It is a small contribution, but it adds up.
Of course, there are times when replacement makes more sense than repair. If an appliance has multiple failing systems, if the cost of repair exceeds 50-60% of the replacement cost, or if the model has known design defects that make future failures likely, we will tell you honestly that replacement is the better path.
Our commitment is to give you an honest assessment. We do not want to repair something that should be replaced, and we definitely do not want you to replace something that could have been repaired. The decision is always yours -- we just make sure you have the information to make it well.
